Photoelectric eyes are sensors mounted 4-6 inches above the floor on either side of the door opening. They create an invisible beam across the opening. Testing photo-eye sensors: Start closing the door, then wave an object (like a broom handle) through the sensor beam about 6 inches off the floor. The door should immediately reverse. If it doesn't, check sensor alignment and cleanliness, then retest.
Modern systems offer additional protections:
Timer-to-close automatically closes the door after a set period if left open, preventing accidental overnight exposure.
Battery backup allows operation during power outages when you need to leave or secure your home.
Motion-detecting lights illuminate the garage when movement is detected, improving visibility.
Smart home integration sends alerts to your phone if the door is left open and allows remote monitoring and control.
Children should learn garage door safety from an early age:
